Sun May 13 Redistricting Reform in Ohio: The Voters First Constitutional Initiative 12:30 pm
Non-partisan good-government groups, including Common Cause and the League of Women Voters, have proposed a constitutional initiative that would reform Ohio’s legislative redistricting process and eliminate gerrymandering once and for all. The proposed constitutional reforms would take politicians out of the process of drawing district boundaries and replace them with a 12 member Independent Citizens’ Commission. In creating new districts (for both the state legislature and the U.S. Congress), the Commission would be required to minimize the splitting of communities, make elections more competitive, and fairly represent the electoral preferences of the voters of Ohio. If passed by the voters in November, this would create new districts in time for the 2014 elections. At this point, the Voters First coalition (which includes the Ohio Council of Churches and the NAACP) is working to collect the 356,000 valid signatures needed to place this initiative on the ballot. Dr. Richard Gunther, Emeritus Professor of Political Science at OSU, will lead the discussion. He is international coordinator of the 26-country Comparative National Elections Project, and author or editor of 14 books on political parties and electoral processes. He has been working on redistricting reform in Ohio for seven years, and is one of the principal authors of the proposed constitutional initiative. Location: First Unitarian Universalist Church, 93 W. Weisheimer Rd, Columbus 43214. Contact the Church Office at (614) 267-4946 for more information.
