As the World Watches…

We urge the world’s leaders to seek solutions to address climate change as they meet in Copenhagen this week.

Many op ed pieces have been written about what is at stake in these talks and, more importantly, what is at stake with our world. We agree with the Editors of Orion magazine (orionmagazine.org) in their current issue as they write:

It’s understood that any meaningful international agreement must be framed in measurables. But if the conveners in Copenhagen become so carried away with talk about carbon that they begin to think that it alone is going to make the Earth a safer place to live, the agreements forged…will lead to no real change. The climate crisis is not about carbon, any more than the deforestation of the rainforests is about trees….

Climate change is about a species—humanity—that is out of touch with the reality that our planet’s resources are declining. It is about a moral choice: either change the way we live, or destroy the planet as we know it….[T]here will be no solution until people come to understand the degree to which climate change is a moral issues and the degree to which our way of life must change.

Real transformation will happen closer to home, and inside every person—not in Copenhagen. What are you going to do?
