Community Radio WCRS 102.1 and 98.3 FM - A Legacy Project
Simply Living initially applied for a low power radio license in January 2001 when the FCC first opened the window for low power community-owned radio stations. We began broadcasting in July 2007 and concluded our role as the station's licensee with the transfer of WCRS to The Neighborhood Network in December 2010. Our station, WCRS 102.1 and 98.3 FM, established many firsts for Central Ohio radio:
- We were the first Central Ohio radio station to air Pacifica programming, specifically Democracy Now!
- We were the first Central Ohio radio station to offer Somali language programming, recognizing Columbus has the second largest Somali population in the U.S.
- We seized the opportunity for Columbus to be the largest metro area to have low power community radio.
- WCRS is rebroadcast on 98.3 FM, a translator station owned by Columbus Institute for Contemporary Journalism, and is also the only low power station in the U.S. to have the advantage of being rebroadcast.
Through our experience as founder and licensee of WCRS, we learned the importance of public media that serves the community of ownership.
With The Neighborhood Network's current leadership, WCRS continues to offer local programming that includes local music, foreign languages, and coverage of diverse and timely topics that impact Central Ohioans.
